About this interview

Fire and Snow is a work of literary criticism and film study. The book offers a deeper, and sometimes nuanced look, at a number stories that populate our screens and shelves. These are the narratives of popular imagination surrounding us that are found in comics, films, TV shows and novels. At the heart of the book is the idea that the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, two very different men and different style of writers, have given rise to a new type of narrative -- one that speaks directly to our time and place in the early decades of the twenty-first century. Fire and Snow is authoritative in its use of emerging literary theory, and diverse in its examination of cinematic, journalistic and text-based sources. It is also an engaging, humanistic work, one leavened with touches of humor despite the seriousness of its themes. It asks of the reader to keep in mind that all storytelling, across the ages, across media, serves a deeper function, one about choice and value.

Dr. Marc DiPaolo has published nine other books. In 2011 his book War, Politics, and Superheroes: Ethics and Propaganda in Comics and Film was selected by CHOICE, a publishing unit of Association of College Research Libraries, as an Outstanding Academic Title.
