Dr. Joshua Landis, Director of the Center for Middle East Studies, University of Oklahoma

A leading expert and influential analyst in Syrian politics will speak this Monday, April 11, 2016 on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University campus in Weatherford.

Dr. Joshua Landis will speak at 7:00p.m. in the SWOSU Conference Center. Admission is free, and the public is invited. Landis will speak on the policy implications for the United States war against ISIS, the future of Syria and extremism in the Middle East.

Landis travels frequently to Washington DC to consult with government agencies and speak at think tanks on international affairs. Most recently he has spoken at the Woodrow Wilson Institute, Brookings Institute, USIP, Middle East Institute and Council on Foreign Relations. He is a frequent analyst on television and radio. Most recently he has appeared on PBS News Hour, the Charlie Rose Show, al-Jazeera, Frontline, CNN, NPR and BBC radio. He has been quoted frequently in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Time.

He is associate professor and director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. In addition to his academic work, Landis publishes a daily blog, The Syrian Comment, which focuses on the religion, history and politics in Syria. He has lived over 14 years in the Middle East.

Landis has won the best teacher prize at his university, helped raised over $1 million for a new chair in Iranian studies and helped bring the government funded Arabic Flagship Program to OU. Three Fulbright grants, the Social Science Research Council and other awards have helped support his research.

His talk at SWOSU is part of the Al Harris Library Showcase Series.
