Chemical References

Use the resources below for information about chemical names, structures, and properties. These resources can be searched by chemical name, CAS Registry Number, molecular formula or weight, InChIKey, or by structure.

  • ChemBioFinder
    A chemistry and biology index to nearly 2 million compounds. Entries typically include links to additional information from other websites. (Free registration required.)
  • ChemIDplus
    Detailed information on over 400,000 chemicals, including links to relevant journal citations in PubMed MEDLINE.
  • ChemSpider
    A chemical structure database providing fast access to over 34 million structures, properties, and associated information. (Also see SyntheticPages for chemical reactions.)
  • PubChem
    PubChem is the National Library of Medicine's database of chemistry information for scientists, students, and the general public.

This National Library of Medicine site lets you search a wide range of US government resources for information on over 15,000 drugs. Drug Information Portal searches all of these databases: MedlinePlus, AIDSinfo, Medline/PubMed, LactMed, HSDB, Dietary Supplements Labels Database, TOXLINE, DailyMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, PubChem, NIAID Anti-HIV/OI Database, ChemIDplus, Drugs@FDA, DEA, and USA.gov.

Facts & Comparisons provides monographs detailing drug actions, indications, administration and dosage, interactions, adverse reactions, warnings and more. Comprehensive tables compare products of similar formulation, including dose form and strength, distributor name, how supplied, product identification codes and more.

The Orange Book identifies drug products approved on the basis of safety and effectiveness by the FDA. (Note that drugs approved only on the basis of safety are not included.) The Orange Book also contains therapeutic equivalence evaluations for multisource prescription drugs. Searchable the Orange Book by active ingredient, proprietary name, applicant holder, or application number.

This resource contains 15 clinical databases including Lexi-Drugs, with over 1600 drug monographs supported by multiple fields of pharmacology detail.

Micromedex provides rapid access to information on drugs, diseases, acute care, toxicology, alternative medicines, and patient education.

By accessing Micromedex products via the SWOSU Libraries' website, you agree that you will abide by the following terms:

Access to Micromedex content is restricted by a license agreement. Use of Micromedex products under this license agreement is permitted solely for demonstration and training purposes for Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy students.

This Customer License Agreement for Micromedex products prohibits:

  • Use for clinical purposes.
  • Use for emergency response purposes.
  • Use for any commercial purpose, including, but not limited to, consulting services.

This license also prohibits copying, downloading, uploading, or otherwise reproducing content from the Micromedex databases, except in limited excerpts and for personal use. These limited excerpts may be printed, but for personal use only.

(Formerly Natural Standard.) This resource aggregates and synthesizes data on complementary and alternative therapies. Information in the Natural Medicines is evidence-based, consensus-based, and peer-reviewed. Natural Medicine's mission is to provide objective, reliable information that aids clinicians, patients, and healthcare institutions to make more informed and safer therapeutic decisions.

PubChem is the National Library of Medicine's database of chemistry information for scientists, students, and the general public. PubChem contains information on chemical structures, identifiers, chemical and physical properties, biological activities, patents, health, safety, toxicity data, and much more. PubChem's data comes from government agencies, chemical vendors, journal publishers, and other sources.

A searchable database of clinically-oriented drug information. Includes RxList ID, which allows you to identify unknown tablets and capsules by searching for their ID imprint codes and a list of the top 200 prescription drugs by brand name and generic name.

UpToDate is a clinical reference tool that provides current answers to patient care, diagnosis and treatment questions at the point of care. Over 200 journals are regularly scanned and synthesized into topic reviews by clinical experts. The content is peer reviewed and fully referenced.

Important instructions for accessing USP-NF Online: Before using USP-NF Online you must create a personal USP Access Point account. Complete this sign-up form to create your account. You must use your SWOSU email address. 

The United States Pharmacopeia National Formulary (USP-NF) is an online reference of public pharmacopeial standards. It contains standards for medicines, dosage forms, drug substances, excipients, medical devices, and dietary supplements. You'll need to disable your browser's pop-up blocker when using the USP-NF.

WebCSD offers fast searching of the Cambridge Structural Database. Search facilities include 2D substructure, molecular similarity, text/numeric and reduced cell searching. Text, chemical diagrams, and 3D structural information can all be studied in the results browser using entry summaries and an embedded three-dimensional viewer. The Java browser plugin is required to use some WebCSD features. The Java plugin is not compatible with recent versions of the Chrome browser; use Internet Explorer instead. Internet security experts recommend that you enable the Java plugin only for sites which require the plugin.
